History and government

Where does the name Issaquah come from?

"Issaquah" is an anglicization of a Southern Lushootseed placename. Sources suggest it may mean "the sound of birds," "snake" or "little stream," and the older name "Squak Valley" comes from the same source. The town was briefly renamed Gilman after Daniel Hunt Gilman, who brought railways to the town.

Source: Wikipedia, Issaquah (retrieved Oct. 21, 2026).

Who lived in the Issaquah area before settlers arrived?

Lushootseed-speaking Coast Salish peoples lived in the Issaquah valley and around Lake Sammamish before settlers arrived, and their language gave the town its name. The Snoqualmie Tribe and the Eastside Heritage Center are the best sources for the full history.

Source: Wikipedia, Issaquah (language/name origin only); confirm tribal detail with the tribes.

When did Issaquah become a city?

Issaquah incorporated on April 29, 1892.

How is Issaquah governed?

Issaquah has a mayor-council government. Seven councilmembers serve four-year staggered terms. Current officials are listed at issaquahwa.gov.

Source: Wikipedia, Issaquah (retrieved Oct. 21, 2026).

Is my Issaquah mailing address really in the city of Issaquah?

Not always. The postal city name has no legal tie to city limits. Preston has its own ZIP code; Hobart splits across several ZIP codes; Mirrormont and May Valley use Issaquah's ZIP but are unincorporated King County; and Klahanie carried an Issaquah address until Sammamish annexed it on January 1, 2016. City limits decide your taxes, zoning, police and fire response, permitting and whether you have city utilities or a well and septic system.
