History and government

Where does the name Sammamish come from?

The name comes from "Sqawx," the Snoqualmie name for Lake Sammamish, plus a suffix meaning the people of a place. It originally described the people of the lake, not a city. Other names considered at incorporation included Monohon, Inglewood, Sahalee and Heaven.

Source: The History of Sammamish.

Who lived in the Sammamish area before settlers arrived?

The plateau and lake were Snoqualmie territory before non-Native settlers arrived. Martin Monohon became the first permanent non-Native settler on the plateau in 1877. The Snoqualmie Tribe and the Eastside Heritage Center are the best sources for the full history.

Source: The History of Sammamish.

When did Sammamish become a city?

Sammamish incorporated at midnight on August 31, 1999. A 1992 incorporation vote failed 58 percent to 42 percent, and the 1998 campaign succeeded.

Source: The History of Sammamish.

When did Klahanie join Sammamish?

Sammamish annexed Klahanie on January 1, 2016. Klahanie was left out of the 1999 boundary because it was expected to join Issaquah, and in November 2005 residents voted to join Issaquah but would not take on its debt, so Issaquah shelved the plan in 2006.

Source: The History of Sammamish.

How is Sammamish governed?

Sammamish has a council-manager government. A seven-member city council sets policy, two of its members serve as mayor and deputy mayor, and a professional city manager runs day-to-day operations. Council meetings are held at City Hall in Sammamish Commons.

Source: Wikipedia, Sammamish (retrieved Oct. 21, 2026). Names of current officials change; see cityofsammamish.us.

Are all Sammamish Plateau areas inside the city?

No. Union Hill-Novelty Hill and Ames Lake are on the plateau but outside city limits, so governance and services differ. A mailing address that says Sammamish does not guarantee the parcel is inside the city, so check the parcel before you buy. Our Issaquah post on mailing addresses explains how this works (Klahanie is one example).
